64 sampling sites · 283 active-layer soil samples · 10.4 Tbp metagenomic data
This study establishes a comprehensive microbiome resource for Greenland soil ecosystems.
We conducted 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and ultra-deep metagenomic sequencing on 283 active-layer soil samples collected across broad geographic and environmental gradients. From these datasets, we constructed the Greenlandic Soil Microbiome Genome and Gene Catalog , hereafter referred to as GreenBiome, comprising over 5,300 high- and medium-quality MAGs and approximately 468 million non-redundant genes. This catalog significantly expands the known microbial genomic diversity in Arctic soils, uncovering extensive previously unexplored bacterial, archaeal, viral, fungal, and plant-associated genetic diversity, with notable biodiversity hotspots in acidic topsoils.
The resource also systematically characterizes the functional and ecological dimensions of Greenland soil microbiomes, including large-scale virome profiling, virus–host linkages, antibiotic resistance genes, and biosynthetic gene clusters encoding diverse secondary metabolites.
