We identified CRISPR array structures in 4,313 MAGs, with 657 MAGs containing Cas proteins, thereby forming complete CRISPR-Cas systems.
Notably, 57.5% of the Cas protein types are unclassified, with Type ID being the most common classified type. This indicates a high degree of novelty in the CRISPR systems found in Greenlandic soils.
We detected 10,286 spacers, and the median spacer length was 36 bp. Genomes of approximately 7.5 Mb had the highest number of spacers and Cas proteins.
When these spacers were aligned against the entire NCBI RefSeq database, only 146 (1.5%) spacers yielded significant hits. This suggests most spacer-target interactions are novel, possibly involving host-virus or host-mobile genetic element interactions that have not been previously characterized.
High Novelty Indicator The extremely low hit rate against known databases underscores the unique nature of the viral and mobile genetic element communities interacting with Greenlandic soil microbiomes.
