Viral Genomes Overview

We identified 3,130 viral genomes from Greenlandic soil samples, with 931 genomes containing complete direct terminal repeat structures representing fully assembled genomes. The virome of Greenland showed minimal similarity to known viruses, with less than 1% sharing an ANI of >95% with viruses in the IMG/VR and Global Soil Virome datasets, positioning Greenland as a reservoir of novel viral entities.

Most classified viruses belonged to the Uroviricota phylum (98.6%), primarily consisting of double-stranded DNA phages. Protein-sharing network analysis classified viruses to the family level, with the majority belonging to Chaseviridae (26.2%), Mesyanzhinovviridae (10.1%), and Peduoviridae (3.5%).

Host prediction analyses indicated that these viruses primarily target bacteria within the Proteobacteria (33.8%), Actinobacteriota (27.5%), and Firmicutes (15.1%) phyla. The paucity of eukaryotic viruses was notable, with merely two potential eukaryotic viruses detected.

Greenlandic viruses represent a largely unexplored viral diversity with significant implications for microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycling.
