We identified 1,705 antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) that conferred resistance to 28 drug classes of antibiotics based on the Comprehensive Antibiotic Research Database.
The most prevalent ARGs belonged to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC), major facilitator superfamily (MFS), and resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) antibiotic efflux pump gene families, with most ARGs exhibiting multi-drug resistance.
We compared the ARG profile of Greenlandic samples with those from other global environments. The Greenlandic samples clustered together and exhibited a higher relative abundance of genes conferring resistance to glycopeptides and peptides.
The presence of these ARGs raises concerns about potential environmental risks associated with horizontal gene transfer.
